Speech and language therapists work in partnership with parents and education professionals to develop a child’s communication skills.
This can be helping to form sounds correctly, expanding vocabulary, using vocabulary accurately or finding alternative ways to communicate if a child cannot talk.
Speech and language therapists can also support families where there are concerns with a child’s eating/drinking/swallowing.
Referrals into speech and language services can be made by your child’s health visitor or GP. You can also ask for more information from your School/Nursery SENCo. Your local children’s centre may offer drop in sessions and workshops led by speech and language therapists.
The children’s communication charity I CAN has produced a suite of resources available to parents and professionals to help support children’s communication.
